Because cleaning won’t get the job done on its own
If Covid has taught us anything, it’s that hygiene is incredibly important and this winter is no exception!
We can all ensure that our homes don’t become a haven for nasty germs and viruses, including the dreaded and potentially deadly Covid virus in all its forms and strains.
If you want to keep your family members safe, you need to regularly clean and disinfect your home.
The truth is, our home’s surfaces provide temporary homes for lots of germs and viruses. And as soon as you touch a contaminated surface and then touch your face or eat without washing your hands, you’re providing viruses with an opportunity to enter your system and make you sick.
What’s the difference between cleaning and disinfecting your home?
Many people make sure their homes are clean but don’t take the extra steps needed to disinfect their houses.
So, what’s the difference?
The truth is that cleaning and disinfecting your home go hand-in-hand.
You remove all the built-up grit, dirt, and other visible debris like blood and bodily fluids when you clean surfaces. You might do this by sweeping, wiping down surfaces, and dusting. Sure, this leaves your home looking and feeling fresh and tidy, but unfortunately, if you want to keep your home germ-free, cleaning on its own is not enough.
Does that mean cleaning is pointless?
Not at all.
In fact, cleaning is the first step in disinfecting your home. It ensures that germs, bacteria, and microorganisms can’t hide behind any grime or dirt on your homes’ surfaces.
And, once you’ve finished cleaning, you can begin the job of disinfecting.
To disinfect the surfaces in your home, you need to:
Choose an adequate disinfectant for your needs. In other words, make sure it is appropriate for the surfaces you are cleaning and that it kills the germs and viruses like Covid 19 that you are trying to wipe out. You’ll find this information on the label. At Brighter Choices, we prefer the Dettol range of disinfectants. They’re highly effective and stringently tested to prove their efficacy. There’s a cool little video on the Dettol website that shows how their products work. Check it out here: How Dettol Works.
Make sure you’re wearing any personal protective equipment you need, like gloves to protect your skin.
Apply the disinfectant according to the manufacturer’s instructions, keeping the surface wet for as long as the label directs. This ensures that all the nasties are exposed to the disinfectant for long enough to kill them.
Wipe off or leave the disinfectant on the surface as per the product’s instructions.
Crucial rooms in your house to clean and disinfect
Obviously, the more clean and disinfected surfaces in your home, the better. But there are a couple of hotspots that deserve close attention.
The first is your kitchen. Your kitchen surfaces can become contaminated by bacteria like e-coli present in the foods you are preparing. There’s also a good chance your food can become contaminated by unclean surfaces that haven’t been disinfected. And when you eat this food, you can become seriously ill.
Kitchen surfaces are also one of the highest traffic and most touched areas of your home. So, you need to consider cleaning and disinfecting:
- Kitchen benchtops
- Kitchen cupboards
- Kitchen handles
- Light switches
- Fridges – inside and out
- Floors
- Ovens
- Microwaves
- Stovetops
Meal preparation surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected before and after every meal is made.
Things like surface disinfectant and hand soap or sanitiser should always be kept and used in the kitchen.
The second area that deserves special attention is your bathroom. Without being too gross, viruses and germs can be spread by bodily fluids, like saliva, and faeces which can be found on bathroom surfaces.
Even if you rinse your bathroom sinks and remove visible stains from your toilet, microorganisms that can make you sick can still be invisibly lurking, waiting for a chance to infect your family and visitors.
Products such as disinfectant spray and disinfectant wipes should be a staple in your bathroom, and everyone should be reminded to use them.
Is cleaning and disinfecting your home to wipe out Covid necessary anymore?
We hear you.
We’ve all got Covid fatigue, and many people believe that we need to learn to live with it.
But unfortunately, as we are charging headlong into Winter, there have been predictions that Covid numbers will surge.
There’s also the matter that Covid is hard to pin down. It’s constantly mutating, with new strains rearing their head all the time.
Maybe we can’t completely eradicate Covid, but most of us would rather not catch it like any other awful bugs and viruses. And for people who are already in poor health, have respiratory problems, or are immunocompromised, Covid is much more than an inconvenience; it can be lethal.
Wouldn’t you rather spend quality leisure time with your family than spend time feeling miserable and locked in isolation?
What if you don’t have time to clean and disinfect your home regularly?
We live in a society where most people are exceptionally time-poor. Between work, running children to all their social and extracurricular activities, looking after pets, and squeezing in a little bit of me-time, there’s very little time for most people to carry out regular deep cleans of their homes.
If you don’t have time to make sure your house is free from impurities, it’s time to outsource.
But finding reliable, trustworthy cleaners who do their job to a high standard every time is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Well, if you live in the Hills District, you just struck gold.
