The Essential Home Cleaning Kit for Every Household

Get cleaning with the right tools

We know what you’re thinking.

Why do I need a home cleaning kit if I have a professional cleaner?

Well, if you’re like most people, your house will need spot cleaning between cleans.

Not to mention the need to attend to emergencies that can arise when your cleaners are not there…we’re looking at you red wine drinkers!

So, we’ve put together a list of cleaning kit items you can use to keep your home sparkling.

Let’s peek inside:

A cleaning combination as old as time

Bicarbonate soda and vinegar should be in every home cleaning kit.

Not just because they fizz delightfully when you add them together.

But because they’ve been used for eons for a range of cleaning needs. Your mothers probably used them for a variety of cleaning tasks. Even your grandmothers probably used this powerhouse cleaning combination.

So why look for fancy products when there are simple, inexpensive, highly effective, tried, and tested options out there?

Bicarbonate soda and vinegar can be used for cleaning items all over your home.

They can be used to clean your shower, particularly the grout. Or to unclog sinks.

Some people use them to clean pots and pans or refresh their dishwashers or washing machines (before you do this, check the manufacturer’s instructions and warranty requirements).

We keep our vinegar in a chocolate shaker. This lets us sprinkle it on stubbornly unclean surfaces and add vinegar from a spray bottle. We then leave it a while to work its magic and wipe it off.

You’d be surprised how powerful this simple solution can be.

The vanishing act

Let’s face it. There are some things we don’t want to see in our beautiful homes.

We’re talking about smudges, dirt, and fingerprints on walls. And let’s not even think about stains and scuffs on furniture and floors.

But unfortunately, they happen, especially if you have kids.

The solution?

We find White Eraser Pads do a brilliant job of removing all these blemishes and more. They can even be used to remove soap scum from bathroom surfaces.

They’re magical little sponges and should be included in every home cleaning kit.

And the best bit?

White Eraser Pads are activated using water. There are no nasty chemicals, so your home can remain blissfully chemical free!

A Soft Touch

If you’re sick of throwing cleaning cloths away, we’ve got an excellent alternative for you…microfibre cloths.

These cloths can be used repeatedly; you just need to pop them in the wash between cleans.

Not only are they eco-friendly, but they’re also extremely gentle and can be used on kitchen cupboards and other surfaces that coarser cloths might scratch.

They can be used for most general cleaning tasks.

But there are specific microfibre cloths for cleaning glass, TV screens, computer screens and other technology items.

When hygiene matters

We’re living in a strange new world, and if Covid has taught us anything, it’s taught us that hygiene matters.

For that reason, we always pack Dettol bathroom, kitchen and disinfectant products in our home cleaning kits.

We’re not suggesting that Dettol can kill Covid-19 (we’ll leave that to the scientists), but it can kill many other nasties.

Germs can live on surfaces, lurking, just waiting for you to pick them up. Dettol products are brilliant at counteracting this problem. Use it liberally around the home to stop viruses in their tracks and keep your family safe.

Dust busting 101

So many dusters, just spread the dust around. It gets flung into the air and then settles back down on your floors, furnishing and household surfaces. It’s one of those tasks that can feel futile.

But dusty surfaces can cause hay fever and set off allergies leading to uncomfortable symptoms.

So, what can you do?

To get rid of dust, we use microfibre dusters. They trap and pick up the dust rather than just scattering it around.  They really are quite a wonder.

And just like micro-fibre cloths, micro-fibre dusters can be washed and used again. So not only are you making your house clean, but you’re also doing your bit for the environment.

Streak-free zones

Take a look at your windows and sliding doors?

How are they looking?

Glass seems to be a magnet for sticky fingerprints, dirt, and dog kisses.

And so many people put up with dirty, streaky windows and doors because cleaning them is just too arduous.

But it doesn’t have to be.

Invest in a squeegee, and your home can be streak-free. They’re not expensive, and they’ll leave your glass looking shiny and transparent.

Not only that but they can also be used on numerous surfaces. Think about using a squeegee on your car’s windscreen, mirrors, glossy tiles, and curved surfaces.

Brush It Up

We haven’t gone off on a tangent. We’re not talking about personal hygiene and fabulous hairdos.

The truth is you can never have too many brushes for cleaning purposes.

Think about it, there’s:

  • grout brushes
  • scrubbing brushes
  • window track brushes
  • brushes on vacuum cleaners
  • lint brushes

Even toothbrushes are fantastic for cleaning small nooks and crannies. And they’re great for bathroom taps and plugs.

We highly recommend keeping various brushes for those hard-to-reach places or surfaces that need a good scrub.

IS THAT IT?

No, we use a whole lot of products and equipment to make your house sparkle.

But with these items in your home cleaning kit. You can keep on top of your housework between your Brighter Choices clean.

And if you don’t do cleaning at all (we get it, there’s more to life), then ask us about our Freshen Up service so that your house has that just-cleaned feeling all the time.
